Bad Dreams Anyone?

Right now, all I want to do is go lay in bed and cry! Instead, I am sitting here putting on a fake happy face for my kids while I blog about how sorry I feel for myself and how my whohaa feels like it is on FIRE!! And to make things worse, I have been having horrible dreams. They are so bad that I really actually cry in my sleep and wake myself up. So I am getting no break from myself. My whohaa hurts ALL day, and then my sleep, which is my only break from my fire crotch, is being ruined by my dreams!! I am beginning to wonder if it is a side effect from my Prozac. Has anyone else had horrible dreams while on Prozac? I really hope that isn't what is causing them. I really don't know what I will do if I can't take my Prozac anymore!! It has helped me sooooooo much!

  1. Jaene,

I am not a prescriber, but I am a therapist with lots of experience (personal and professional) with various antidepressants. Caveat deployed, I'd like to offer up some anecdotal information. *Some* people experience more vivid and/or disturbing dreams on *some* antidepressants, including ones that no official information states that such effects are likely or possible. Remeron did it to me. I've had clients say Prozac did it for them. I'm thinking anything that monkeys around with neurotransmitters has the potential to have cognitive effects (how could they not), and those effects would be likely to be unique to each user.

That said, I would wonder whether your unconscious is trying to work out some "stuff" - surely there is a lot to get worked through, or to chew on, when one has chronic severe pain. In other words, could the dreams, as frightening as they are, be about what is happening in your physical health? Such pain often conjures up monsters in my dreams - monsters of various kinds. Seems like a perfectly reasonable way for our unconscious(es)** to translate constant pain into our dream realities.

Second, if the dreams are unbearable, pay attention to the content, but maybe switch meds :) Yeah, the content might be useful, but who needs an overload of nightmares? There are other meds out there that are chemically similar to yours, and that therefore may work as well for you, but that may not cause you nighttime upset. Sorry you might need to switch. It's a pain, isn't it?
